All Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder
WOAH! Holy shit, Batman! What the hell happened here? Don't be afraid of reading this brutal yarn. Despite being universally spat on by critics and fans alike, this sucker of a book is extremely entertaining despite what you may fear.
Except for robin and Alfred, all the characters are way out of character, especially Batman. In fact, Batman is bat-shit off his rockers in this one. Though is wasn't certain, I'm pretty sure he killed people in this one. At least set thugs on fire for the fun of it. And he talks to the bat-mobile. And he laughs as maniacally as the Joker, who in this, has a dragon tattoo on his back and strangles a woman after having sex with her. This Joker doesn't think his funny at all.
People really need to look past the out of character moments and the cruel dialogue and see the humour in this. In fact, it's one big joke with some bad ass art.
It has many hilarious and unforgettable lines like Batman telling Robin, "You've been drafted into war," and out of character "shut up" when Robin is trying to be nice and the infamous "Are you retarded? I'm the GODDAMN BATMAN!"
Jokes aside, it's a fun, entertaining read, something comics were meant for. And hey, it's not part of continuity so why be mad at it? It's awesome, sexy and bad ass. Sure it may be repetitive with lines like "Dick Grayson, Age 12" appearing too many times and the fact it took 4 issues (chapters) for Batman to take Robin from the circus to the bat cave, but hey, how fun was it to see teeth getting knocked out!
RATING:
Batman Story - 9/10
Continuity - N/A/10
Art - 10/10
Badassness - 10/10
OVERALL - 9.5/10
On the downside, this trade only collects issues 1-9, and issue 10 was released in 2010, with the Joker's story and connection to the murder of Dick Grayson's parents left unresolved. We do get closure in the trade, but Joker has still gotta confront Batman & Robin. Artist Jim Lee explains that it is entirely his fault for the delay. Frank Miller has written it all to the finish and Lee has been too busy to finish it and promised it will return in 2011.
It's now 2013 as this review was written and still no conclusion. It seems now that it is not Lee's fault, and now D.C.'s fault that we haven't, and may not ever see and end to this. You'd think that wouldn't stop a man like Miller, but with his bad reviews and quite obvious drop in quality of writing with himself is understandable that we may not see this come to light.
But go on! As a bat-freak, you owe it to yourself to read this rumpus.
