Batman R.I.P.
Woah!...
There isn't much to say than what hasn't already been said about this. It's confusing, convoluted, bat-shit crazy and completely unnecessary. I've never hated something so much yet could not put it down. I had to read it start to finish. I made me furious yet I enjoyed every page with a mix of intrigue and loathing.
I was told you needed to read "The Black Casebook" to understand this but that isn't true if you know all of Batman's publishing history.
If you prefer the gritty, realistic Batman held down in opposing non-superpowered foes, then this isn't for you. Batman has a mental meltdown and becomes the Batman of Zur En Arrh and is guided by the bat-mite, now just a figment of Batman's warped insanity. All of this orchestrated by Black Glove leader Dr Hurt. Or is he Thomas Wayne? Or the Devil?
Blah Blah Blah, Batman does what he does best and then ends up in the middle of Final Crisis. The whole thing is absurd. But you cannot fault Morrison's writing as well as Tony S. Daniels' art with the Joker. Arguably the most insane and evil Joker ever. Just check out this panel where the Joker speaks with fork-tongue, literally.
Hate or love it, you should read it. You'll find yourself uncontrollably picking it back up again and again just to immerse yourself in something that probably wasn't meant to make sense. The "Mulholland Drive" of comics.
