Batman Incorporated: Demon Star
Batman Incorporated continues into the New 52 with story unchanged, but the character design updated. Chris Burnham has taken on the main responsibility as artist to end this series. (SPOILERS AHEAD) If you've read the first Batman Incorporated, you would know by now that Talia Al Ghul is the leader of Leviathan, something so awesome and simple that I can't believe i didn't see that coming. Talia has put a bounty on Damian Wayne's head so Batman has put Batman Incorporated on red alert to protect Damian and fight in a war for Gotham City.
Though I'm not the biggest fan of Chris Burnham's art, as it feels like a poor man's Frank Quitley, it suits Damian perfectly. At this point Damian is at the peak of his liveability. From his teamwork with his father to fight thugs in a bloody abattoir to his new persona as Red Bird, it makes you miss his outings with Dick Grayson.
This succeeds on almost everything. It's the dark sequel to the first Incorporated, where the first was all about character and style, this is all about fast paced action with class and a lot at stake. It's the Empire Strikes Back of Batman Incorporated. You're left wanting more of Damian and his violent innocence, and the tension that builds to his inevitable battles with his oversized clone.
It's still filled with Morrison's symbolism ranging from occult to mythology to astrology, but for the first time it's less important and the focus is on Batman's relationship with Damian. It becomes an unfortunate realization that Bruce Wayne will never have the time be a father for Damian. Instead, he is just a cool Dad that is Batman, who let's his kid knock teeth out of thugs all while stopping his evil Mother from killing them for the sole reason that Ra's Al Ghul just raised her to be insane.
RATING:
Batman Story - 9/10
Continuity - 10/10
Art - 8/10
Coolness - 10/10
OVERALL - 9.2/10
