Batman Incorporated
This is one wild ride. It bleeds Grant Morrison. Batman Incorporated is go ahead and Batman is travelling the world. Each issue has a different artist and serves as an introduction to these heroes who have branded the legacy of Batman and become recruits in Bruce Wayne's global Batman Empire, which was not just created to bring fear to the criminal world, but prepare for a war with a new criminal organisation known as Leviathan.
Though I feel as though this peaks in the early issues set in Japan, with a very sexy leather clad Catwoman trying not to get eating (or implied tentacle rape as a nod to Japanese manga and hentai) by a giant octopus, the tedious middle issues are still exciting and set up major plot points for the future.
As we are introduced to the older retconned Batwoman Bruce Wayne's first true love, and villains like Lord Deathman and Doctor Deadalus, this becomes a colourful but serious atempt to revitlaise the Campy Batman as cool, modern and trippy. I do feel at times this becomes convoluted but like all of Grant Morrison's run, it's best to take this slow and re-read to take it all in.
I feel that this is the most exciting part of this Morrison's Batman run and most experimental with the Character even if the plot and character choices have a lot to be desired. The ending may be an epic cliffhanger, the best I've ever read in comic form, but it makes this cool, refreshing, fast paced new direction for Batman anti-climatic.
RATING:
Batman Story - 7/10 (The focus is on Batman's recruits)
Art - 8/10 (Lots of different styles to take in)
Continuity - 10/10
Coolness - 10/10
OVERALL - 8.7/10
